Our story: From the heart of Cumbria

Discover the inspiration behind The Heritage Letters, born from a desire to share the Lake District's history and beauty, and dedicated to bringing comfort and connection through handcrafted letters and keepsakes.

Born from the heart of Cumbria

As an artisan in the Lake District, I wanted to find a way to share the history and beauty of this landscape to give something meaningful back to the world. The true spark, however, came from a place closer to home. My own mum lives with advanced Parkinson’s and dementia in a care home. Living far away from her, I wanted to find a way to reach her. I knew that hearing a beautifully written letter read aloud about familiar places and history might spark a tiny moment of comfort deep inside her memory.

How the magic happens: Uncovering hidden history

Every month, the creation of our letters and keepsakes begins with a pair of walking boots and a sense of adventure! I head out into the Cumbrian landscape to track down local secrets and forgotten history. Whether I'm exploring an isolated stone cottage where a real-life Russian spy once hid, or standing on a lakeshore picturing Victorian steamships in the mist, I am always hunting for that perfect, tantalizing mystery. Once I find a piece of hidden history, the artisan work begins. I write the journey down as a personal letter printing it on our beautiful, tactile Oyster Wove paper so it feels like a genuine piece of mail. To bring the tale to life, I accompany each letter with a real, high-resolution archival photograph and design an exclusive, bespoke artisan keepsake—such as a custom narrative bookmark—that perfectly mirrors the story. We don't just write letters; we dig up real history and transform it into an immersive afternoon of discovery, connection, and wonder!

The magic of the lakes: Where landscape meets legend

To me, the Lake District is so much more than just beautiful views; it is a living canvas where nature and human history are completely stitched together. Every misty valley, stone-walled lane, and quiet lakeshore holds a story. It’s a landscape that has inspired generations of creative minds, rebels, and dreamers—from Beatrix Potter’s cottage garden to the secretive hideaways of international spies. I want to share these stories because they carry a wonderful, timeless sense of comfort and familiarity. For older adults, especially those living with dementia, these rich historical tales are powerful keys that unlock their own deep memories. By sending a piece of Cumbria through our letters, I’m not just sharing a landscape; I'm sharing a sense of wonder, sparking conversations, and bringing the vibrant, inspiring spirit of the fells right to their bedside.

A bygone era: Textures of the golden age

The Golden Age of Travel and Beatrix Potter’s world are the absolute blueprints for our aesthetic. We deliberately reject the cold, mass-produced feel of the modern digital world. Instead, we channel the romance of a 1930s journey—an era when travel was an elegant adventure and letters were eagerly anticipated, cherished keepsakes. This influences every single tactile detail of the experience. We print our letters exclusively on heavy, premium Oyster Wove paper, giving the letters a beautiful, nostalgic weight. The visual look mimics the organic warmth of Beatrix Potter’s world, focusing on hand-drawn textures, delicate historical patterns, and authentic visual evidence.

"The Heritage Letters provide such a thoughtful and engaging experience. The stories are captivating, and the keepsakes are truly special."
